The Tommy John Injury Formula™

DRIFT + DRAG + SHRUG = The Tommy John Injury Formula

⚠️ The Epidemic No One Warned You About

Tommy John surgery—once reserved for professional pitchers—has become increasingly common among youth athletes. Over 50% of UCL reconstruction surgeries in the U.S. are now performed on players 15 to 19 years old. These kids are breaking down before they even get recruited.

And here’s the truth no one tells parents:

It’s not just overuse. It’s poor mechanics.

At Velocity RX, we’ve identified a clear, correctable pattern behind almost every arm injury we see in adolescent pitchers. We call it:

The Tommy John Injury Formula™ = DRIFT + DRAG + SHRUG

The Tommy John Injury Formula™ = DRIFT + SHRUG + DRAG

🔴 DRIFT

🔴 DRIFT

Drift refers to moving one’s center of mass forward as the very first move to home plate. The proper movement, the first movement, should be a downward movement of the pelvis.

Drift refers to moving one’s center of mass forward as the very first move to home plate. The proper movement, the first movement, should be a downward movement of the pelvis.

When DRIFT happens, the following issues occur in the pitching mechanics that cause undue stress to the pitching arm:

1. The arm will be late or accelerate uphill first, causing medial elbow strain, and then it will eventually lead to shoulder pain.

2. Too long a stride. When one’s stride is too long, it inhibits proper spinal turn. Power is also diminished because the muscles are stretched beyond their optimal length. This will cause performance problems that affect velocity and command.

3. Injury. With the center of mass unable to rotate correctly, all the stress is directed towards the arm to generate power and velocity.

⚫️ DRAG

🔴 DRIFT

🔴 DRIFT

Drag refers to the intentional or habitual movement of dragging the back leg. Dragging the back leg is a “teach”.

This means that someone taught you to drag your back leg purposefully.

This goes against the body’s natural neurological sequence of rotating the pelvis and spine around a planted front leg.

Drag refers to the intentional or habitual movement of dragging the back leg. Dragging the back leg is a “teach”.

This means that someone taught you to drag your back leg purposefully.

This goes against the body’s natural neurological sequence of rotating the pelvis and spine around a planted front leg.

Would you ever get on a boat and try to take off with it still tied to the dock?

To teach this makes zero sense. Twenty years ago, and longer, pitchers ended up in a fielding position with their follow-through, their back leg landing equal to or sometimes ahead of the front leg.

That has changed to a back leg drag or a follow-through that resembles a figure skater, not a baseball pitcher.

When you drag, the following issues occur:

1. A loss of velocity by diminishing the center of mass when turning around a planted front leg

2. Hip, groin, and hamstring injuries due to unnecessary torque in those areas as you drag that back leg.

3. Back and pelvic injuries

4. Undue arm strain occurs because the arm now has to generate power, rather than the core.

⚪️ SHRUG

🔴 DRIFT

⚪️ SHRUG

The SHRUG is all about the over-facilitation of the upper trapezius muscles.

The shrugging violates the movement principle of the Scapular Humeral Rhythm.

All of these “taught” arm paths, like the M, W, and T, increase upper trap engagement and violate the Scapular Humeral Rhythm.

The shrugging violates the movement principle of the Scapular Humeral Rhythm.

All of these “taught” arm paths, like the M, W, and T, increase upper trap engagement and violate the Scapular Humeral Rhythm.

Violation of this fundamental movement law causes impingement of the shoulder, which then goes down the kinetic chain and causes issues to the elbow.

The shrug will cause the following issues:

1.   Rotator and Labral Impingement

2.  A very late arm, which will cause a valgus strain to the elbow

3.  Velocity and command loss

🚨 The Formula Is Predictable—And Preventable

DRIFT + SHRUG + DRAG = Tommy John

These three mechanical breakdowns are visible, measurable, and correctable—but only if you know what to look for.

Most pitching coaches miss them.
Most surgeons treat them after the damage is done.

Velocity RX stops them before it ever begins.

🧠 Our Solution: The Velocity RX Method

We don’t guess.
We don’t follow old-school cues like “stay tall” or “throw harder.”

We use medically designed movement analysis and corrective strategies to fix the real problem—the root cause of arm injury.
